Saugus wouldn’t have done anything different

Once the huge mass of people cleared off the Cougar Stadium football field, I was able to finally find Saugus Coach Jason Bornn. He was obviously bummed Hart beat his boys, 24-21, on a last minute field goal, but was proud of how his team played.

‘I thought our kids competed and did everything we asked of them,’ Bornn said. ‘I can’t think of anything we would have done differently in preparation, in play-calling, in coverage, in special teams or anything else. [Hart] just had some things go their way and we didn’t.’

One thing that did go Saugus’ way was the play of RB Ryan Zirbel, who rushed for 206 yards and two TDs in 21 carries. The second of those TDs came on a beautifully crafted 61-yard run that helped tie the score, 21-21, early in the fourth quarter.

However, the Centurions couldn’t stop Hart from inching deeper and deeper into Saugus territory on the ensuing drives and a 37-yard pass from Hart’s B.R. Holbrook to WR Spencer Souza was all it took to set up Johnny MacArthur’s 29-yard, game-winning field goal.

It’s definitely a tough break for the Centurions, but I know this team will be making a lot of noise in the Northern Division playoffs, begining next week.
