This season marked the first time Quartz Hill advanced to the divisional semifinals -- something that’s oddly remarkable since the Rebels are always one of the best teams in the Golden League.

Unfortunately, their dream season came to an end Tuesday following a four-game loss to Empire League titan Cypress in the Division III-AA playoffs.

It wasn’t the kind of Cinderella-type ending Quartz Hill was looking for, but the program finally showed it can beat more than just the Lancasters and Littlerocks of the world.

Saturday’s sweeping victory over top-seeded Oaks Christian was probably the greatest triumph in team history, and it’s about time the Rebels finally earned a reputation as a team to be feared outside its Antelope Valley nest.

It might be a little tough to repeat this year’s results in ’08 with seniors Kahlia Burnley and Kahli Remy chucking their mortarboards into the air this June. But I’m sure Coach Larry Vocke will find plenty of ways to win with spike-meister Kara Sherard (17 kills against Cypress) coming back next fall along with a fist-full of other talented players.

Hopefully, Quartz Hill making the semifinals isn’t one of those once-in-a-generation kind of things.
