Edison Coach Dave White made a point of searching out Blake Ayles, pictured, after Orange Lutheran’s 28-16 victory in the Pac-5 quarterfinal.

And it wasn’t easy for White to find Ayles, but White didn’t leave until he made sure he wished the tight end good luck on his career, which will continue at USC.

‘He’s a great player,’ said White, whose team lost to Ayles and the Lancers in last season’s Pac-5 championship game.

I think Ayles caught three passes from Blake Hyepock for 43 yards, two of them on third-down conversions, and another on a second-down play to get close enough for Ricky Pemasa to run in for a score. Ayles also was the intended receiver on a big defensive pass interference penalty.

Week after week, on third down it seems like there’s only one player on the field that matters.

‘He’s very calm and poised under pressure,’ said Jim Kunau, Lutheran’s coach.
