Cross-country: Girls from Saugus finish second in Portland, Ore.

Members of the Saugus girls’ cross-country team finished second Saturday at the Nike Team Nationals in Portland, Ore.

The Centurions, who won their second consecutive Division I state title last weekend in Fresno, scored 171 points and produced a team time of 1:40.13 on the 5,000-meter course located on the infield of Portland Meadows race track. Temperatures were reported to be in the low 30s.

Katie Dunn, a senior at Saugus, finished fifth overall in 19:18 and freshman teammate Kaylin Mahoney was seventh in 19:23.5.

Manlius (N.Y.) defended its title with 83 points, combining for a team time of 1:38.22. Madeline Morgan, a freshman at Mountain Brook (Ala.), won the race in 18:54.5.

Members of the Los Angeles Loyola team finished eighth in the boys’ competition. The Cubs, who won a Division II state title last week, scored 261 points and produced a team time of 1:25.35. James Kostelnik, a senior at Loyola, finished eighth overall in 16:28.3.

Led by Chris Derrick’s first-place finish in 15:39.8, a team from Naperville (Ill.) finished first with 125 points, followed by a team from Los Alamos (N.M.) with 127.

A group of runners from Murrieta Valley, which finished runner-up at the Division I state championships, placed 17th with 364 points, and members of Division I champion Dana Point Dana Hills placed 19th with 379 points.
