Two of the Southland’s best are proving to be the best against the best in the Sunshine State. Try and say that three times. Anyway, Fairfax and Dominguez have represented California well in the Amare Stoudemire Invitational Classic, advancing to face one another in the championship game tonight in Davenport, Fla., at 6:30 PST.

Both teams feature two of the most prized junior recruits in the nation. Renardo Sidney has been unstoppable for Lions, top ranked in The Times’ preseason poll. Opponents have had a difficult time against the Dons, ranked No. 6 by The Times, due in part to the outstanding play of Jordan Hamilton. The Floridians have been flabbergasted.

It’s not as if there’s a shortage of talented teams in this showcase. In fact, there’s plenty, including Norcross (Ga.), a team that had to be considered a favorite heading into the week-long event considering the Blue Devils are ranked No. 8 in USA Today’s Super 25 poll. Apparently, the best this tournament had to offer wasn’t quite good enough for the best we had to offer.
