Millikan shocked them. Stunned them. Stupefied them. ‘Gosh, it was a great game,’ chirped Millikan girls’ basketball Coach Lorene Morgan after her unranked Rams beat the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits, 51-46, Monday night in the Moore League opener for both teams.

Yes, those Jackrabbits, The Times’ top-ranked team in the Southland and the No. 4-ranked squad in the nation.

Yes, those Jackrabbits, who beat the No. 1 team in the country a couple weeks back.

Yes, those Jackrabbits, who squashed opponents from Ohio to Minnesota, Virginia to Philly.

‘To be quite honest, that’s who we knew we needed to beat this season,’ Morgan said. ‘And it was our time.’

It certainly was as Courtney Clements hit a 10-foot jump shot midway through the fourth quarter to give the Rams (11-2) their first lead of the game. Clements -- an Arizona-bound forward -- scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half and had seven rebounds. Jasmine Dixon had 12 points for Poly (9-2).

Now the Rams -- at the very least -- should climb high into the rankings. Extremely high.
