Strong wrestling performances keep rolling in

Here are some more wrestling standouts from last weekend:

-- Koby Collins, Cathedral City: Got four pins in four matches, including one at the first-period buzzer against Brandon Ramirez of San Jacinto in the 130-pound finals, to earn lower-weight MVP honors at the La Quinta tournament.

-- Chad Thornock, Joe King and Rene Marmolejo, San Jacinto: Each had three pins en route to La Quinta titles at 125, 145 and 275 pounds, respectively. Thornock also had a technical fall, while Kling edged Vijay Maraj of Yucca Valley, 5-4, in the finals. Also for San Jacinto, Daniel Tapia won the 103-pound title with two pins and two decisions.

-- Anton Pishchanetskiy and Andrew Amaral, Silverado: Pishcanetskiy was the upper-weight MVP with three pins and the 145-pound title and Amaral claimed lower-weight MVP honors and the 135-pound championship with two pins and a major decision at the Al Dingwal tournament, hosted by Apple Valley. The two wrestlers, as well as fellow individual champions Raymond Rubio at 119, Reginald Rubio at 125 and Nico Galsin at 130, helped Silverado win the team title.

-- Rylee Wightman, Nipomo: Pinned all six of his opponents at the Atascadero New Year’s Revolution to win the 145-pound title and earn Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. Check out this feature about Wightman.

-- The Greyhounds of Atascadero: Had place-winners in all 14 weight classes of their tournament, including four champions (Kyle Ward at 103, Elijah Jackson at 125, Andrew Hernandez at 140 and Brandon Spain at 171) for a first-place finish among 17 teams.
