There are two reasons Santa Ynez is unbeaten in league play heading into its showdown with St. Joseph on Tuesday:

Stellar defense: The Pirates have surrendered only one goal in four league games and haven’t given up more than two goals in a game this season. Junior goalie Hannah Vellekamp has been at the forefront of that effort and she made seven saves in the team’s 3-0 victory over Templeton on Thursday.

Standout scoring: While junior forward Aolani Rueff leads the squad with nine goals and 21 points, no one has been hotter than Kendall Sauter since league play started. The sophomore forward has scored six goals in the last four games as the Pirates have outscored league opponents, 19-1.

Of course, the competition level will go up a notch when the Pirates play a talented St. Joseph team looking to redeem itself after Thursday’s 2-1 OT loss to Lompoc Cabrillo.
