The recruiting race for the most coveted running back in the nation seems to be down to two suitors -- and Florida isn’t one of them.

St. Bonaventure RB Darrell Scott nixed plans for a recruiting trip to Florida last weekend after Gators RB coach Stan Drayton accepted a job as an offensive assistant at Tennessee on Jan. 9. So, it appears as if Texas and Colorado are the only two legitimate contenders left for Scott’s services.

‘Darrell and his mom met with [former Texas running backs coach] Ken Rucker over the weekend and everything went great,’ said St. Bonaventure OL coach Roger Sonsini, who’s been assisting Scott in the recruiting process. ‘It looks like it’s between Colorado and Texas, but you how high school kids are.... He could still change his mind.’

Today, Texas hired Major Applewhite to be its new running backs coach and Sonsini declined to confirm rumors Applewhite would meet with Scott over the weekend. However the personnel move is not expected to greatly influence Scott’s decision since Rucker will remain at Texas in a different position.

Scott was scheduled to meet with Colorado running backs coach Darian Hagan today, but Sonsini said he wasn’t sure if the meeting was still on. Also, Scott has not been in contact with coaches from LSU since before the Army All-American Bowl.

‘Things have quieted down since Darrell came back from the bowl game,’ Sonsini said. ‘Most schools know where he’s probably going to be heading to and they’re no longer calling him all the time.’

No matter what he decides, Scott has said numerous times he won’t announce his decision until Feb. 6, national signing day. He has plans in the works to have the event televised by CSTV.

So it looks as if my September prediction of a Scott show in Gainesville next fall won’t come to fruition. Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to start predicting where Cierre Wood is going to end up.
