Obviously, my number’s not on wrestling coaches’ speed dials

I’m not much of a wrestling guy anymore, and that must have come through in the phone messages I left on Thursday. I was going to try to provide a little insight into the Five Counties Tournament by talking to a few coaches.

Alas, they didn’t call me back. Apparently, having not written about the sport in the last 15 years will get me zilch this weekend in the way of help. It wasn’t always like that, though. There was a time when I covered wrestling. A lot of good wrestling.

I covered Poway wrestling.

The Titans, as they were back then, are the No. 1 team in the state. I’m guessing karma will come around and kick the coaches in the rear who failed to call me. I’m also guessing that Poway will win its fourth consecutive Five Counties title.

By now, they’re probably into the second of five rounds at Fountain Valley High. It will finish up tomorrow/Saturday, with the finals program set to begin about 7 p.m. You can get info about the tournament at the Five Counties website, and supposedly can get results here. If you want to read a guy who does get his phone calls returned, check out Damian Calhoun’s preview.

And, if any wrestlers are actually reading this, tell Wayne Branstetter ‘Hi’ for me. That’s him pictured on the right. By the way, I’m pretty sure he’d return my phone call.
