A check of the West Valley League girls’ soccer standings reveals a couple of surprises. Chatsworth is on top at 3-0-2. Next comes Cleveland at 3-1-1. Seven-time defending City champion El Camino Real is currently third at 3-2.

Even more surprising is ECR’s overall record of 4-8-2. That, along with the fact the Conquistadors have scored only 10 goals this season while giving up 18.

Coach Eric Choi says he’s not concerned, yet. But he admits his young team -- the bulk of the 24-player roster is playing at the varsity level for the first time -- has missed the steadying influence of senior Megan Quinn, who has not played a game while continuing to rehab from a knee injury.

‘We have been making young mistakes,’ Choi said. ‘We’re getting shots in front of the goal but missing wide. Some of it may be confidence, and we’ve also been unlucky.

‘But I’m still confident. We have to tools. If we get fully healthy, we can go far.’
