There were a couple of early games at the Nike Extravaganza at the Meruelo Athletic Center here at Mater Dei High.

In the first game of the day, Ocean View defeated Westminster La Quinta, 45-29.

Here’s a bit of trivia: Did you know that Kevin Kiernan, coach of Mater Dei, once coached at La Quinta? It’s true, and they were good. Can you imagine today that La Quinta won a Southern Section title? It won the 4-A title in 1990 with a 72-62 victory over West Torrance. He coached one of Orange County’s all-time best players, Amy Jalewalia, who was the Division II player of the year. Jalewalia scored 1,023 points that season, fourth in section history for a single season.
