Showdown II between Fairfax and Westchester in boys’ basketball should bring a nice crowd to Loyola Marymount on Wednesday night. And the game better bring out the best in Westchester.

On the surface, the Comets (24-3, 9-1) are flying high, having won 14 of their last 15 games including Monday’s 85-56 romp over Venice in Western League action. The only loss during this stretch was to Fairfax, 68-63, on Jan. 18. A victory Wednesday can get them a share of the 2008 Western League title.

Look below the surface, however. Westchester has lost five straight to Fairfax (21-3, 10-0). The last Comets’ win was Feb. 24, 2006, in the City Championship game. The Lions, who easily dispatched LACES, 91-45, on Monday, took four games from the Comets last season, including the City and Southern California Regional championship contests. And Fairfax won the first meeting this season.

Westchester, which won six City titles in seven seasons starting with the 2000 championship game, needs to restore some balance to the rivalry. There’s a good possibilty the teams could meet a third time in the 2008 City Championship game.
