Sierra Canyon is one of the favorites to claim the Division V-A title a few weeks from now, but it’s going to enter the postseason on a two-game losing streak thanks to L.A. Baptist.

Needing a victory to clinch third place outright and the automatic playoff berth that comes with it, L.A. Baptist pulled off a 40-38 upset victory over Sierra Canyon thanks to the charity-stripe heroics of Ariana Shayan. The senior guard sank a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to push the Knights to a victory over what has to be considered the best small school girls’ basketball team in the SF Valley/North region.

Teammate Alex Inoue‘s 11 points and Katie Wright‘s 24 rebounds (a career high) also played a huge part in the victory.

But what’s up with Sierra Canyon? I thought these gals would be pumped up after losing to Delphic League champions Crossroads the other night. Now they’re riding their first losing streak ... into the playoffs.
