Late Thursday night I considered writing about how the heavyweight class at the Southern Section Inland Division individual wrestling championships was loaded with talent, including all three of the Southern Section’s top-ranked wrestlers and five of the top six.

It’s a good thing I decided to wait -- I would have left out Chaparral senior Matt Reynolds. He’s unranked and only seeded seventh in the tournament, but he is one of four wrestlers still in the running for the heavyweight title today at Los Osos.

After knocking off second-ranked and second-seeded Eduardo Marquez of Temecula Valley, Reynolds will face third-ranked and third-seeded Jerome Long of Morro Bay in the semifinals.

Sixth-ranked and fifth-seeded Diego Vargas of Royal, who defeated fifth-ranked and sixth-seeded Matt Johnson of Murrieta Valley, will take on top-ranked and top-seeded Willie Hernandez of Norte Vista in the other semifinal match.

The top five finishers in each weight class advance to next weekend’s Southern Section Masters tournament at Carter.
