Is this March or May? Hard to tell.

In a rematch of last spring’s Southern Section Division I final, Irvine University once again got the better of Peninsula, and by the identical margin of 11-7, in Thursday’s nonleague showdown in Palos Verdes.

The Trojans didn’t need any trickery to win this battle, either. They didn’t need to tinker with their lineup or wheel in a wooden horse. They simply outplayed Peninsula on its home court.

In last May’s championship match, Jason Lin and John Huang each won two of three singles sets for University, losing only to the Panthers’ top player, Tyler Bowman. On Thursday, both Lin and Huang again won two of three to spark the Trojans (4-0).

The Panthers dropped to 0-2, having lost their season opener to Mater Dei, 10-8, the day before.

So 10 months later I guess you could say that little has changed. Just don’t be surprised if these powerhouse programs match up again in May with another section title at stake.
