Mikah Maly-Karros and Megan Richardson tend to get most of the press at Mira Costa, but here’s a chance to spread it around a little bit as the Mustangs get ready to play San Jose Mitty at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Arco Arena in Sacramento in the Division II state title game.

Tony Ciniglio of the Daily Breeze did a nice piece on Whitney Daniels, the midseason transfer from Santa Monica who hit some big shots in the playoffs. She scored six of her eight points in the second quarter against Ayala in Mira Costa’s 72-64 triple-overtime victory in the regional final. It wasn’t much, but it really kept Mira Costa in the game.

Maybe the most underrated among those responsible for Mira Costa’s surge to the state title game is freshman Kylie Nakamine. She’s the one who took over at point guard after Amanda Johnson tore her ACL in the section quarterfinals. She had a season-high eight points, including a couple of killer three-pointers, against Ayala. Imagine that, a freshman point guard in the state finals. I don’t think of seen that since Nicole Erickson of Brea Olinda. Well done!
