Softball: At Lakewood, coach and player duel

Her drop-pitch can tumble down faster than the housing market. Her fastball has as much shimmy as a dashboard hula doll. Her name is Aubray Zell, the Lakewood ace with an 8-2 record and only three earned runs yielded in 10 games.

How good is she? Just ask the Lancers’ Coach, Andy Miramontes, who will grab a bat and dig into the box against Zell during practice. Miramontes, a fast-pitch softball scrapper of 16 years, calls it ‘a little competition.’ The competition is simple: Miramontes gets three at-bats. Sometimes he wins, sometimes his ace does.

‘I can tell you, she’s really solid,’ he said. ‘There’s a lot of movement on her pitches.’

I’ll take your word for it, Coach.
