Sean Gilmartin of Crespi and Matt Davidson of Yucaipa were the local standouts in the first round of the home-run derby Saturday at the National Classic baseball tournament.

Davidson, a junior, smacked four home runs during the first round, which consisted of seven outs. That was three more than the two hitters from Orange Lutheran combined for. Carlos Lopez of Crespi then hit one home run, and Gilmartin, his teammate, jacked five deep flies from the left side of the plate.

I’m standing on the other side of the left-field fence and there’s a residential street that’s located about 40 feet beyond. Already, three home runs have landed in the street, one then bouncing on a Honda Accord parked in a driveway.

I’m sure the residents who live beyond the outfield fence at El Dorado High just love this annual event.
