Northview, No. 7 in the Times’ rankings, has rattled off five consecutive shutouts to start the Valle Vista League portion of its season.

The Vikings (10-1) began league play almost three weeks ago by beating Baldwin Park, 3-0. Since then they’ve beaten San Dimas, 1-0; Covina, 3-0; Ganesha, 16-0, and Pomona, 8-0.

‘We have softball stats,’ Coach Darren Murphy said with a chuckle. ‘In 79 innings we’ve given up seven earned runs. I don’t have the book with me, but that’s a 0.8 or 0.7 ERA.’ Actually, it’s 0.61.

The Vikings are doing it with pitching and defense.

Leading the way on the mound are starters Aaron Elias (4-0), a senior right-hander, Eddie Pedroza (2-0), a sophomore left-hander, and closer Marc Andrade (4-0, 2 saves). Cal State Fullerton-bound junior Rich Pedroza, a shortstop, and third baseman R.J. Arnold are the gold-glovers.

The Vikings host Baldwin Park today/Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
