I realized St. Bonaventure was off to a fantastic start, but Saturday’s 15-1 victory over Taft illustrated why the Seraphs have to be considered a favorite for the Division IV title.

The Seraphs recorded 15 hits against the Toreadors in the Redondo tournament victory and, unsurprisingly, Casey Serna led the way. The quarterback revelation of 2007 who’s going to Oregon on a baseball scholarship, drove in seven runs on three hits, two of which were home runs.

Of course, none of this should come as a shocker because Serna is once again having a monster season. He’s batting .477 with five homers, 19 RBI, 20 runs scored and nine stolen bases. His pitching hasn’t been too shabby, either -- he’s 3-1 with a 0.78 ERA.

Serna isn’t the only one making opponents kick the dirt in frustration. Cal State Bakersfield-bound pitcher Martin Medina is 4-0 with a 0.53 ERA and teammate Jeremy Dann is 4-1 with a 1.09 ERA and a .366 batting average. In addition, sophomore Michael Abeloe, who’s older brother, Daniel, was a two-time All-CIF pitcher for the Seraphs, is batting an incredible .500 through 46 at-bats.

But is this group of Seraph standouts talented enough to challenge for a division championship? I think so, especially when you consider the impressive victories St. Bonny has had over , Valencia, El Camino Real and Camarillo.

Plus, Serna, Medina and Dann were all on St. Bonny’s 2006 divisional runner-up squad and you know they’re hungry to prove to all the Northviews and Patriots of the world they’re a championship-caliber team.
