Softball: Woodbridge Classic is a bittersweet end for Trabuco Hills

There was nothing about the 26th Woodbridge Classic that went according to plan. In the end, a couple of teams few would have given any chance of winning played for the title and delivered a compelling championship.
Trabuco Hills scored a 1-0 victory over North Torrance on the strength of sophomore Kayla Massey’s three-hit shutout and her home run in the top of the sixth inning off Hayley Rodriguez. It was Massey’s second homer of the season and couldn’t have come at a better time.
It provided for a bittersweet finish to the tournament. Earlier in the day, Trabuco players had attended the funeral of Pamela Mendonca, mother of first baseman Julianne Mendonca (who did not play). Pam Mendonca had died of colon cancer on April 2, and players arrived for their semifinal against No. 22 Foothill just 15 minutes before game time. The Mustangs won, 10-4.
‘We were playing for a bigger cause today,’ said Trabuco Coach Erin Webber.
The victory gave Trabuco a rather modest 10-9-1 record.
Two weeks ago, Trabuco was 3-9-1 going into Sea View League play. ‘We said, ‘It’s a wash. Our season starts now,’’ Webber said. ‘We’re on a 7-0 roll since then.’
The stretch includes two victories over Foothill, one in league, 4-3, the day after Mendonca passed away, and Saturday’s stunner.
Hard to imagine a better end under difficult circumstances.
