The major league record for career grand slams is Lou Gehrig’s 23. I’m not sure the ‘Iron Horse’ ever hit a bigger salami than the one Peninsula’s Kristiana McCarrell hit during yesterday’s game against Redondo.

The game was tied, 3-3, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning as McCarrell stepped to the plate. That’s when she lauched a ball over the left-center field fence and gave the Panthers a 7-3 victory and a share of the Bay League title with the Sea Hawks.

Thanks to McCarrell Peninsula has a season sweep of Redondo and will get the league’s top seed in the Southern Section-Toyota playoffs.

‘I was just trying to get a base hit to right field to drive in the run,’ McCarrell told the Breeze.

Trying to get a base hit but hitting a grand slam -- that’s not too shabby.

If you’re curious the big league’s active grand-slam leader is Manny Ramirez with 20.
