For the second time in a week, Mater Dei named an assistant coach to take over the head position, this time naming Andy Thomas as the boys’ soccer coach.

Thomas has coached 18 years in high school or club programs, and guided Laguna Beach to three Southern Section titles, in 1997 and 1998 (co-championship) in Division IV, and 2002 in Division V. He is the director of coaching at Laguna Niguel Soccer Club.

‘Though we lost a strong core of seniors, we still have a talented group of young athletes in the program to garner success and continue to build,’ said Thomas, who was an assistant at Mater Dei last season when the Monarchs were 18-6-4 and lost in the Division I semifinals to champion and Trinity League rival Santa Margarita.
