Basketball: Pasadena’s Adams is on the verge of breakout campaign

Not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but every once in a blue moon I’m able to discover a relatively unknown player from the Southland and provide our loyal Varsity Times Insider readers with a note about him before those recruiting gurus over at Rivals.com and Scout.com can figure things out. Today is one of those days.

The subject: Steven Adams of Pasadena. The reason: It’s simple, the 6-foot-7, 220-plus pound junior is far too talented, has far too much upside, to have flown beneath the radar for this long. We’re talking about a forward who could end up being mentioned among the top prospects in the nation before all is said and done.

‘Steven can take you outside, post you up inside, make the extra pass. He’s just one of those guys with a very high basketball IQ,’’ Pasadena Coach Tim Tucker said. ‘He’s going to be the man this year. We’re running our offense through him. People are going to start noticing him. There’s no hiding Steven anymore.’’

And while he may not be a household name to some, there are plenty of observers that are familiar with him, namely Division I scouts. According to Tucker, several Pac-10 Conference schools have been in contact with Adams, including UCLA and USC. No official offers have been made, however. At least, not yet...
