Anaheim Esperanza Coach Bill Pendleton will come to praise the Los Angeles Jordan Bulldogs on Friday at Gardena High. And to bury them.

Pendleton’s Aztecs, ranked No. 16 in the Southland by The Times, are out to win the intersectional showdown. But that doesn’t mean Pendleton doesn’t respect what the Bulldogs are trying to accomplish by taking on a schedule that also includes No. 4 Santa Ana Mater Dei and No. 9 Ventura St. Bonaventure.

‘I don’t care how good you are, I wouldn’t want to play those teams,’ Pendleton said. ‘You can tell by the schedule they’ve taken on that they’re trying to do big things.’

Although Esperanza has pounded Jordan the last two years by a cumulative score of 105-39, Pendleton said the Bulldogs have become more competitive each year and they present plenty of worries at the skill positions. Pendleton said his defense resembled ‘dogs on linoleum’ last year trying to chase down the speedy Bulldogs.
