Redondo Beach senior linebacker Andrew Caldwell appears to have avoided a potentially catastrophic spinal cord injury after being hurt while making a tackle Friday during the Seahawks’ 58-20 loss to Mission Viejo.

The tingling sensations Caldwell felt in his body immediately after being injured had subsided and he felt ‘pretty good,’ according to Redondo Beach Coach Gene Simon. The family was still awaiting results of an MRI test for a suspected herniated or bulging disk, Simon said.

Compounding the injury, Simon said, was the fact that Caldwell had to wait 21 hours in a hallway on a gurney at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance while waiting for a room. He could not eat while waiting and was finally admitted to a room Saturday night.

‘His mom was really upset about it,’ Simon said, ‘but I guess the hospital was doing the best it could.’
