Bishop Amat Coach Steve Hagerty isn’t afraid of riding a hot hand (or arm), and new quarterback Jerry McClanahan, pictured, appears to be the newest ace in the Lancers’ gridiron arsenal.

Since taking over from Nick Lenhart against Orange Lutheran two games ago, McClanahan has passed for more than 300 yards and hasn’t allowed a single offensive turnover while manning the backfield helm.

‘He’s taken care of the ball, and that’s what we like to see,’ Hagerty said. ‘Jerry has made us better offensively, and we’re winning ball games, which is all that matters.’

Hagerty hasn’t officially dubbed the junior pigskin slinger his permanent quarterback, but it looks like he’s good for at least the next couple of starts. Lenhart is already pulling triple duty as a punter, safety and wide-out for the Lancers, and Hagerty would like to keep him locked in those roles until safety Justin Gener returns from a hamstring injury.

And speaking of injuries -- it’s scary to think how good the Lancers will be once UCLA-bound linebacker Isaiah Bowens comes back from a broken foot in a couple of weeks.
