It’s been a defensive dogfight so far here at San Pedro, where the Pirates and Carson are ensnared in a 3-3 tie at halftime in their Marine League opener.

Carson lost two fumbles and retained possession on another that was kicked out of bounds.

The Colts tied the score late in the second quarter on a 23-yard field goal by Juan Sanchez that capped a 16-play drive. Carson had first and goal at the San Pedro eight-yard line but could muster only three more yards before the field goal.

San Pedro also had a first-and-goal situation in the first quarter after a Carson fumble but turned the ball over two plays later. The Pirates scored on a 36-yard field goal by Donald Jarrin early in the second quarter.

After three early incompletions, Carson quarterback Daniel Torres found a rhythm, completing six consecutive passes, with four going to tight end Morrell Presley. Torres finished the first half having completed six of 11 passes for 60 yards.

San Pedro’s Joseph Deguchi had a 41-yard catch and gained 32 yards rushing in six carries. Carson will receive the ball to start the second half.
