Football: Umoh helps Morningside get Ocean League victory

Gabriel Umoh rushed for 311 yards and three touchdowns in 20 carries to lead visiting Morningside to a 31-14 victory over Hawthorne on Friday, the Monarchs’ first Ocean League victory of the season.

Umoh, a senior honors student, is being recruited by Nevada Las Vegas and UC Davis.

Safety Joshua Smith also contributed nine tackles and a forced fumble for Morningside (3-5, 1-2). Edwin Magana’s 12 tackles gave him more than 100 on the season. He also rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown in 10 carries.

Defensive tackle Khalid Jones, who has drawn interest from UC Davis, had 12 tackles and two sacks. The Monarchs play at league leader Beverly Hills (6-2, 3-0) on Friday.
