Basketball: Southern Section releases new playoff divisions

After weeks of gathering enrollment information and doing lots of research, the Southern Section has released its playoff divisions for boys’ and girls’ basketball. Go here.

This is the new format using enrollment and competitive equity based on how teams did in the playoffs the last two years.

In boys’, the top division is I-AA and is led by Mater Dei. Other top schools are Pasadena, Dominguez, Etiwanda, Long Beach Poly, Riverside King and Los Alamitos.

In Division I-A, top schools are Capistrano Valley, Los Osos, Corona Centennial and Mission Viejo. In Division II-A, Los Angeles Loyola gets to compete against La Mirada, Mayfair, Santa Barbara and Simi Valley.

Harvard-Westlake drops to Division III-A and will compete with Brea Olinda, Oak Park, Sonora and Twentynine Palms. Campbell Hall will be in III-AA and face Anaheim Canyon, Hart, La Canada, Santa Margarita and St. John Bosco, much bigger schools.

Crespi, expected to have a strong team, drops to Division IV-A and will face the likes of El Segundo, Orange Lutheran, Muir and Price.
