James McConico of Compton came in averaging 28.8 yards per carry, but he’s never faced a defense like Long Beach Poly. Eli Edwards dropped McConico in the end zone for a safety, increasing Poly’s lead to 18-0 with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

The game was halted briefly with 5:07 left in the first quarter as the officials tried to regain control after a series of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against both teams. The head coaches came onto the field for a discussion with the referee.
