Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley needs only 283 yards to surpass Todd Marinovich’s Orange County record of 9,182 passing yards set from 1984-87 at Mater Dei and Capistrano Valley.

Barkley could set the record Thursday when Mater Dei plays host to Orange Lutheran at Santa Ana Stadium, but it might take the senior another game based on his season average of 256 yards passing per game. Barkley averaged 356 yards as a junior.

Barkley would have already shattered the record had he not missed three games and part of a fourth. As a freshman, he was injured early in the game during a playoff victory over Colton and did not play the following week against Loyola. As a sophomore, he did not get to play against JSerra because the game was forfeited. As a junior, he did not get to play against St. John Bosco because the game was canceled as a result of brush fires.
