Surprise, surprise, surprise. Santa Margarita was supposed to be in a rebuilding year after the graduation of key players from last year’s state Division III championship team, but the Eagles (4-0) won the Morro Bay tournament championship, beating Westlake, 66-54, with Daniel Munoz earning tournament MVP honors.

And Golden Valley (4-0), a relatively new school located in Santa Clarita, pulled off the shocker of Saturday night, beating Simi Valley, 89-83, in overtime to win the Simi Valley tournament title. Coach Chris Printz has an improving 6-foot-6 player in Trevor Wiseman. Maverick Ahmanisi of Golden Valley was selected tournament MVP.

Etiwanda showed that it’s an elite team this season by winning the Pasadena tournament championship, knocking off Sylmar, 79-48, in the final. It’s interesting to note that Sylmar defeated Cleveland in the semifinals and Cleveland knocked off highly regarded Pasadena earlier.

Upland took third place in the Mission Viejo tournament with a 79-69 victory over Capistrano Valley. Chip Powell had 22 points.

Agoura won the Burbank championship, 77-75, with Stephen Hicks scoring 19 points and Hasan Khan getting 18 points.
