Just hours before the City Section Championship Division game is scheduled to take place this afternoon at the Coliseum, Birmingham Coach Ed Croson dropped a bombshell. He confirmed Saturday that he’s interested in the vacant coaching position at Chaminade.

Croson was Chaminade’s coach for two years and spent six years as the athletic director at the West Hills campus before he left for Birmingham, where he has guided the Patriots to four City championships this decade.

Chaminade has fallen behind Catholic school powers Crespi and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in the San Fernando Valley, and the hiring of Croson would be a big boost for the Eagles.

Croson said he has spoken to several people familiar with Chaminade’s program and will likely interview for the position.

His departure from Birmingham would be have an impact on the City Section and probably allow West Valley League rival Taft to regain its dominance among Valley City schools.

Chaminade, which competes in the Mission League, could be sent to a new league in 2010 that includes Gardena Serra, Harvard-Westlake, St. Paul, St. Francis and Cathedral.
