Ed Croson, who guided Lake Balboa Birmingham to four City Section Championship Division titles this decade, has accepted the position of head coach at West Hills Chaminade.

Croson coached Chaminade for two years and was athletic director for six years until resigning and becoming Birmingham’s coach in 2000. He transformed the Patriots into a City power with a spread offense that was hard to deal with.

‘I think we’ve done everything we could at Birmingham,’ Croson said. ‘I love the school. There’s a lot of things we can’t do. I’m really a Catholic school guy. This is a chance to go back and do well.’

Chaminade has struggled against San Fernando Valley Catholic powers Crespi and Notre Dame, and Croson’s return ought to ignite the Eagles. He’s expected to bring back as an assistant former Chaminade coach Rich Lawson.

Birmingham has chosen longtime defensive coordinator Jim Rose to replace Croson.

An official announcement from Chaminade is expected this afternoon.
