Cate defeated Foothill, 8-7, in overtime Saturday to take third place in the Western States Tournament at Stanford.

Cate tied the score with less than a minute left in regulation on a goal by Shelby DeGroot and prevailed when senior tri-captain Cascade Zak scored in the extra period, giving the Rams their second victory in three games this season against Foothill. While most ties in lacrosse are decided by sudden-death overtimes involving a full complement of players, the Western States Tournament employed a unique format in which the teams each used only one fielder and one goalie until a goal is scored.

Cate won four of five games in the tournament, losing only to eventual champion Solana Beach Santa Fe Christian. Zak finished the tournament with 19 goals and four assists; senior Tori Thompson had 10 goals and seven assists; sophomore goalkeeper Alexx Temena had 34 saves.

And perhaps the most grueling stat of the trip: The Rams spent 13.5 hours in their school bus, according to assistant coach Linda Sommers.
