On a cool, windy day at Costa Mesa Estancia High, Sheldon Price of La Puente Bishop Amat ran the fastest 100 meters, winning his Southern Section Division III preliminary heat in a wind-aided 10.60 seconds.

Defending state champion Randall Carroll of Los Angeles Cathedral ran his 100 heat in 10.65, two-hundredths of a second faster than teammate Kevin Ally. No surprise there. Carroll didn’t run the fastest preliminary time last year and went on to win state titles in the 100 and 200.

‘We kind of pulled in the reins a little bit to make sure he qualified and stayed healthy,’ Cathedral Coach Roosevelt Ivory said. ‘You win your heat, you qualify. That’s the whole purpose of this meet.’

Cathedral’s 4x100 relay team, anchored by Carroll, logged a 41.30.
