Talk about razor-thin margins.

Crenshaw’s DeAnthony Thomas edged Santee’s Tevin Carter by one-one hundredth of a second in the boys’ 100 meters, winning in 10.60 seconds to capture his first City title. Carter finished in 10.61 and Taft’s D.J. Morgan was third in 10.63. All three advance to the state meet next week.

‘I was nervous,’ Thomas said of whether he knew he had won at the finish line.

The runners went to look at photos of the finish on a computer and Thomas, whose time was a personal record, acknowledged being surprised to see Carter right there alongside him. Carter said he wasn’t surprised.

‘I thought I came up at the last minute and pulled away with it,’ he said. Carter’s previous best was 10.78 seconds.

Was it frustrating to come so close and lose?

‘I’m happy,’ Carter said. ‘I wouldn’t mind losing to him.’

In the girls’ 100 meters, Gardena’s Alexis Reed won in 12.23 followed by El Camino Real’s Jasmine Woods in 12.33 and Carson’s Keshawna Fisher in 12.36.
