Girls’ track and field: Atascadero’s Hinton among qualifiers in shot put

Atascadero junior Markita Hinton had the third-best qualifying toss of 43 feet 9.75 inches in the shot put today at the state track and field preliminaries, but she has some catching up to do if she hopes to beat the leader going into Saturday’s championship.

Anna Jelmini of Shafter today had a toss of 53-08, which is a record for the state meet. The other qualifiers from the Southland were Kayla Kovar of Ridgecrest Burroughs (42-10), Urina Harrell of Gardena Serra (42-05.75), Teresa Loya of St. Joseph (41-10.75), Luseane Makenesi of Katella (41-09.50) and Jasmine Burrell of North Torrance (41-04.50).
