Lakewood, which returns a host of quality players led by quarterback Jesse Scroggins and running back Jerry Stone, debuts at No. 7 in the first National Prep Football Poll, making the Lancers the highest ranked team in Southern California.
Oaks Christian is the only other Southland school to make the national rankings, checking in at No. 15. Has Jamie DeMoney, who compiles the poll, somehow forgotten about a little juggernaut named Long Beach Poly?
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Aquinas, the two-time defending 5-A state champ and winner of 24 consecutive games, is ranked No. 1.
In the West Coast rankings, Servite is No. 6, Mission Viejo No. 7, Long Beach Poly No. 8, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame No. 9 and Huntington Beach Edison No. 10.
Lakewood gets a stiff test in its opener against Crenshaw, with the winner moving into the hunt for a state bowl game.
