What’s the point of calling it a press box if the press can’t use it?

That’s becoming the problem for sportswriters this season, as press boxes are filled with coaches, boosters and everyone but sportswriters. Then there are the delightful fans.

I tried to blog from the Mission Viejo press box Friday night, and two mothers kept standing in front of me seemingly every play. I asked politely if they might sit down and the response was, ‘Don’t be rude.’ Then it was, ‘We paid for these seats.’

Forgive me, but I guess I was out of line. It’s back to the sideline for me and trying to stay out of the way of officials and coaches.
