What a game to match the City Section vs. the Southern Section in Friday night’s battle between Carson (2-0) and visiting Gardena Serra (2-0).

‘They’re huge, they’re athletic and they’re a good team,’ Serra Coach Scott Altenberg said of the Colts, who have victories over Southern Section teams Santa Ana Mater Dei and Fontana Miller.

Carson junior quarterback Justin Alo has given the offense a boost, and the Colts’ defense is playing very well.

But with the exception of playing Crenshaw in the playoffs, Carson won’t face a team with better skill-position athletes than Serra. What’s a defense to do when you have to decide whom to cover among receivers Robert Woods, George Farmer and Paul Richardson Jr.?

It’s gotten to the point that some Serra fans think the team should score on every play.

‘It’s not going to happen,’ Altenberg warns.

But the development of junior quarterback Conner Preston has Serra making big plans.
