Crisis counselors were on hand today when students returned to class at Garden Grove for the first time since senior fullback-linebacker Kevin Telles died Friday night after collapsing during a game against Westminster.

There was a moment of silence at the start of fourth-period classes and students signed a giant mural as a tribute to Telles, said Garden Grove Unified School District spokesman Alan Trudell. Students also circulated a memorial book in which they could record their memories of their classmate.

Members of student government also sold T-shirts adorned with Telles’ jersey number to help his family defray funeral costs. Funeral services are pending.

A memorial service Sunday evening at St. Columban Catholic Church in Garden Grove was packed to capacity with students, teachers, family and friends of the fallen player.

Part of a school assembly on Friday will be set aside to honor Telles, Trudell said. The Argonauts were expected to practice as scheduled today and play against Irvine Woodbridge on Thursday.
