There’s controversy brewing in the Sunset League, where Los Alamitos senior quarterback Dylan Cook quit the team earlier this week and was replaced by sophomore Dylan Lagarde, who began the season as the starting quarterback at Long Beach Poly.

On Thursday night, Lagarde passed for 195 yards in Los Alamitos’ 52-0 win over Huntington Beach Marina. Southern Section Commissioner Jim Staunton cleared him to play for the Griffins after failing to find evidence that he transferred for athletic reasons.

But that hasn’t stopped other coaches in the Sunset League for questioning the transfer. Huntington Beach Edison Coach Dave White, whose team plays Los Alamitos next Friday, said, ‘I don’t think you should be able to play for two different schools in the same year on varsity.’

The big question is how the seniors at Los Alamitos will respond, considering Cook guided the team through summer and fall.

Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said Friday that ‘kids are really resilient.’

Lagarde played in two junior varsity games for Los Alamitos before making his varsity debut Thursday. He has a strong arm and certainly possesses the talent to improve the Griffins’ offense.
