Mission Viejo is showing why it’s considered one of the best teams in Southern California. Tesoro is showing what happens when a Southern Section division finalist loses 19 players to graduation.

The Diablos, which will remain unbeaten unless Tesoro puts together an epic comeback, recorded a pair of safeties and two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 39-0 halftime lead.

Tesoro’s lone bright spot -- an interception on its two-yard line by Cody Wittick -- led to a safety after Mission Viejo’s Marc Millian tackled running back Trevor Weis in the end zone. Minutes later, Tesoro quarterback Brett Mason was chased out of the back of the end zone by Mission Viejo’s Zach Hoffman for another safety.

Mission Viejo has picked apart the Tesoro secondary. Quarterback Dallin McEwen connected with Maurice Green on a 53-yard touchdown pass and found Joey Branker on a 25-yard pass. Both receivers were wide open after breaking away from coverage.

The Diablos put in most of their second-string defensive players on Tesoro’s last possession of the first half.
