Edison has won its first seven games and is off to its best start in 24 years under Coach Dave White, but is it the best Chargers’ team White has ever coached?

White said it’s too early to tell. His 2001 team, led by quarterback Tommy Grady and receiver-defensive back A.J. Martinez, finished 11-1-1 after tying Los Alamitos in its seventh game and losing to Long Beach Poly in the Division I title game at Angel Stadium.

One thing is certain: White’s 2009 squad is as good a group of kids as White has ever coached.

‘If you combine their football talents and their academic standards and their morals, it’s as good a team as I’ve ever had,’ said White, noting that he had several players with 4.0 grade-point averages. ‘Good student-athletes, high-character kids.’

Edison can take another step toward a possible CIF state bowl championship berth on Friday when it plays host to Los Alamitos at Huntington Beach High.
