Stan Thomas, who served as commissioner of the CIF Southern Section from 1986-93, died this morning at an Orange County hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was 78. Thomas lived in Fullerton and had been struggling with illnesses for the last 11 years, according to his son, Chris.

He was only the sixth commissioner in Southern Section history. He previously coached football in La Mirada, served as principal at Santa Ana Foothill and worked as an administrator in the Tustin Unified School District. He was a graduate of Los Angeles Manual Arts and played football at Whittier College.

‘Our sincerest condolences go out to the entire Thomas family,’ said Southern Section Commissioner Jim Staunton.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Gloria, two sons and two daughters. Funeral arrangements are pending.
