Twelfth-seeded Millikan upset fifth-seeded Cajon on Saturday night in a 40-31 overtime victory in the second round of the Southern Section Division 1AA playoffs.

Millikan led 17-12 at halftime and kept the lead until midway through the fourth quarter when Cajon went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 29 all.

Cajon had a few opportunities in the last 15 seconds of the game to clinch the win, but the Cowgirls couldn’t convert their shots.

Millikan’s Armelia Patterson made the difference in overtime, sinking two three-pointers to catapult the Rams to victory.

Both teams struggled from the field. Millikan converted 18% of its shots and Cajon 15%.

‘I’ve never had a team shoot that bad ever in my life,’ said Cajon coach Mark Lehman.

He chalks up the team’s loss to a lack of maturity.

The Cowgirls graduated superstars Layshia Clarendon and Darshae Burnside last season after claiming the Division 1AA championship, and played this season without any seniors.

‘This is a two-year plan,’ Lehman said. ‘This year we might’ve even exceeded some of our goals, and we did beat some good teams.’

Millikan (17-10) will play in the quarterfinals against Etiwanda (23-6) on Wednesday.
