At one point it seemed like Mater Dei had as many victories at the Honda Center as the Ducks, but the Monarchs had gone through a recent drought in the building.

That ended this evening with a 68-65 victory over Etiwanda in the Division 1AA championship after the Eagles missed a chance to take the lead in the final 15 seconds and a dhance to tie at the buzzer. It was Mater Dei’s first section title since 2006.

Etiwanda had the ball following a steal by guard Jordan Daniels, but the Eagles couldn’t find a good shot and Daniels had to chuck up a three-pointer with 13 seconds left that was an airball.

David Brown then made two free throws for Mater Dei to extend its advantage to 68-65, and Evan Jenkins’ last-gasp three-point attempt was blocked by Keala King, even though it appeared that Eli Stalzer had grabbed Jenkins’ arm on the shot.
